For retirees

RMD estimator

When your required minimum distributions start, and roughly how much this year's will be.

Example values shown. Replace them with your own. Uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. If your spouse is your sole beneficiary and more than 10 years younger, your RMD will be lower (Joint Life Table).

Estimate only. Each 401(k) must take its own RMD; IRA RMDs can be totaled and taken from any IRA. Roth IRAs and, since 2024, Roth 401(k)s have no lifetime RMDs. Missed RMDs carry a 25% excise tax, reduced to 10% if corrected in time. Read: Understanding RMDs.

For business owners

Simplified estimate for planning conversations, not a plan design. Self-employment figures approximate the deduction for half of self-employment tax using the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500. Compensation is capped at $360,000. A cash balance plan, set by an actuary, can add substantially more for owners in their 50s and 60s. See plan structures and credits.
